ABOUT

In search of fulfillment through intelligent, open discussions about politics, religion, philosophy, art, and developments in law, the Marquise de Rambouillet, Catherine Vivonne, founded the first French Salon in the early 17th century. The salon was a refuge of free expression and open conversation among its members. Vivonne selected members for their temperament and diverse perspectives to achieve robust yet cordial debate. Marquise de Vivonne and her daughter Juliet Vivonne inspired the creation of salons across France, which served as a font of cultural, social, and philosophical revolution.

Through this site, we hope to carry on the tradition of lively, robust debate of timely and timeless topics.

Our age is, in special degree, the age of criticism and to criticism everything must submit. [Some beliefs] may seek to exempt themselves from it. But they then awaken just suspicion, and cannot claim the sincere respect which reason accords only to that which has been able to sustain the test of free and open examination.
